OPENING SCENE
Llud is riding through the countryside, leading two horses behind his own. He arrives at a small market; sheep and cattle in pens, as well as hides and other items, are being sold. Rowena is standing in one of the pens, sizing up some cattle. The Cattle Dealer is with her.
Rowena: My father wants a sturdy breed to add to his herd.
Cattle Dealer: You won’t find better than these. Bred from prize stock, these are.
Rowena presses her fingers into the animal’s long coat, trying to assess its condition. Llud approaches the pen.
Llud: Keep prodding that one, and it’ll fall over.
Rowena: [excited] Llud!
She laughs and goes towards him.
Rowena: Is Arthur with you?
Llud: As a leader there is no man better, but as far as assessing cattle is concerned, you could sell him an overgrown sheep and he wouldn’t know the difference. Heh! And you? Is it the Jute custom to send their women to barter?
Rowena: My father is busy. He trusts my judgement.
Llud: Oh yeah …? Well you’ve got an eye for horses, but these beasts are more suited for butchering than breeding.
The cattle dealer comes over.
Cattle Dealer: Why, devil take you! These are the finest beasts we’ve had in the yard for years!
Llud: Huh!
The Cattle Dealer walks off. Rowena steps out of the pen, and Llud takes her hand.
Rowena: I agree with you, Llud. Will you advise me?
Llud: I’ll be glad to, when I’ve sold my horses. There should be some suitable specimens here … to …
Llud stares at something further off.
Rowena: What is it?
Llud: That man over there, by the fire. Kurk. I haven’t seen him in years.
Kurk is leaning against a ladder, clearly spinning a yarn to some listeners.
Llud: A long time ago, we fought the Saxons together, in the east.
Rowena: Why such a grim look? Are you not friends?
Llud: [laughs] We were as brothers.
Rowena: He seems a man of great charm.
Llud: Charm, yes! A good fighter, strong, courageous, a great wit, good company, a remarkable sense of humour … and the blackest rogue you’ll ever chance to meet!
Llud looks down at Rowena with a wry smile.
