News article: The Stage and Television Today, 23 November 1972
Thursday, 23 November 1972 06:00 pmConsidering filming on the series was almost complete by this article's publication date, the article contains a surprising number of errors.
In the first paragraph they refer to the hero as "King Arthur", and in the second, they state that the series was filmed at Cadbury and Glastonbury.
In the fifth, they again refer to Arthur as "King." In the sixth, they spell Llud's name incorrectly, and say that Merlin will be played by Maurice Evans, though the character of Merlin, possibly intended as a political adviser rather than a wizard, never appeared, and the idea of including him had been discarded by the time the fourth episode was filmed.
In the seventh, they refer to Roy Baird's involvement, though he doesn't appear in any of the credits. In the last paragraph, they include David Purcell and Stuart Douglas among the writers, though neither is credited with any episodes.
Most of the factual errors and outdated information - in fact, some whole paragraphs - seem to have been copied from this article published in TV Today, on 15 June 1972.
HTV’s Arthur on network
HTV’s new children’s drama series, Arthur of the Britons, will begin network transmission on Wednesday, December 6. HTV West have spent more than £500,000 on the new adventure series, a 24-part saga devoted to the exploits of King Arthur.
The story of the West Country’s own legendary hero has been filmed on the locations actually associated with Arthur, among them Cadbury Camp, the reputed site of Camelot, and holy Glastonbury.
“This has been very exciting project [sic] by any standards and reflects our confidence in the production team, led by Patrick Dromgoole, we have created at Bristol,” says HTV.
HTV has found an American distributor, Heritage Enterprises, for the series.
The role of Arthur will be played by Oliver Tobias, star of the London production of Hair.
Michael Gothard, well-known for his appearance in The Last Valley and in Ken Russell’s The Devils plays Kai, a loyal follower of the King.
Jack Watson, who starred in Pretenders, is cast as Ludd [sic] The Silver handed, a powerful Celtic warrior who rides at Arthur’s right hand. Merlin will be played by Maurice Evans.
Peter Miller is the producer and his team includes Roy Baird, the executive producer for Women in Love, Henry VIII, and If.
Writers include Terence Feely, Robert Banks Stewart, Jack Seddon, David Purcell, Stuart Douglas and Bob Baker and Dave Martin the Bristol playwrights responsible for both Pretenders and Thick as Thieves.
